Responsible gambling

We write about the gambling business, which means being clear about what that business sells.

The product is a priced risk

Every casino game, sports market and lottery draw is built so that a fixed share of everything staked stays with the operator. That share is the industry’s revenue; it is not a fee added at the end but a property of how the game is priced. It applies whether you win on the night or not, and it is the reason the sector can fund the marketing, sponsorship and technology we spend our time analysing.

Bonuses are part of the same arithmetic. A “free” 100 attached to a 35× wagering requirement asks for 3,500 of turnover; on a typical slot that turnover is expected to cost more than the bonus is worth. You can run the numbers yourself in the wagering calculator.

Symptoms the industry knows to look for

  • Sessions that run past the length or the stake you had settled on.
  • Answering a loss with a larger bet in order to get level.
  • Staking money that belongs to a bill, or that came from credit.
  • Keeping the true totals from partners, family or friends.
  • Betting mainly to shift a mood.

Guards that work

  • Choose the limit while you are still calm — a figure and a cut-off hour — and treat the figure as already lost.
  • Make the operator’s own tools do the work. Licensed firms are obliged to offer deposit caps, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion, all effective at once.
  • Exclude yourself sector-wide, not brand by brand. An OASIS registration in Germany closes every licensed operator together, and comparable registers run under most European licences.
  • Read a bonus as a marketing cost. When an offer makes you keep staking to release your own balance, that condition is the whole point of the offer.

Independent help

  • Check dein Spiel — the German public-health service for gambling, free and anonymous.
  • GamCare — UK counselling and the National Gambling Helpline, at no cost to the caller.
  • BeGambleAware — independent information plus a short self-assessment.

Betting is an adults-only activity, and nothing we publish is meant to move anyone towards it.
