Many have been awaiting the release of both the Steam machine as well as the Steam controller. Alienware has been the big boy on the list of companies planning to create the official Steam machines.

It has just been announced that Alienware will be launching their Steam machine model without the SteamOS offering the same specifications as their planned Steam machine but with Windows installed along with the Steam interface. Steam will automatically launch in big picture mode giving the gamers a more console like experience.

The Alienware rig looks extremely similar to their upcoming Steam machine except for color and absence of the Steam logo. This may be a more desirable option to gamers not interested in using the SteamOS.

Specs below:

  • Intel Core i3 processor Haswell
  • Adapted Nvidia Maxwell-based GPU with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory
  • 500 GB SATA 3 hard drive
  • 4 GB DDR3-1600 memory
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 AC
  • HDMI out, HDMI in (with pass-through), Gigabit Ethernet, optical audio output, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports

We are told that 1080p at 60 fps is to be expected.

  1. 1080p 60fps on what exactly? every game? for how long? what settings? Talk about unhelpful useless information. So the one thing that actually distinguishes it from your regular custom built PCs is now gone, it doesn’t even have the bloody steam logo on it anymore.

Seriously who is buying this crap? If you buy one of these and actually want the Windows option as opposed to the thing which (barely) distinguishes it from a PC then you are clearly off your head.

  2. I wonder how Valve feels about this. No doubt it’s the best deal for console gamer moving to steam, they will be able to play the whole catalog just with that machine, and that xbox 360 controller probably would be the best choice, considering current user experience with the steam machine gamepad.

  3. I’m not surprised. I can see most people switching to Windows for the larger game library anyway..
